P3O practitioners are often heard talking about the services and functions of P3O. These terms have stuck after the P3O guidance was introduced from AXELOS. Being one of the leading providers of P3O training courses, we are here to discuss what the functions and services of a P3O really stand for. This will give you the insight you need to sign up for our virtual, classroom, and online foundation and practitioner P3O courses.
Before we talk about the functions and the services, let us discuss about two other terms that have also stuck – the hub and spoke. This is a term that refers to the various configurations of P3O that an enterprise might have. If you are delivering projects, this could be as simple as one PMO (Project or Programme Management Office) that is focused on supporting the different projects. If there are many projects to handle, a company might choose to introduce a portfolio level PMO as well. If this is the configuration, the portfolio level PMO is going to be the hub and the permanent fixture. The programme and project level PMOs might be temporary in nature and they are referred to as the spokes.
However, these specific offices that support projects and programmes are not the services and functions of a PMO. But an idea about the knowledge of the PMO practitioner can be achieved by understanding the hub and spoke model. PMO practitioners are expected to have a lot of understanding of what is possible within the various PMO setups. The same is applicable to the functions and services of a P3O.
The functions and services include the following:
- Portfolio support and strategic planning that includes the building of portfolio, analysis, prioritization, and reporting. It also includes the setting up and closing of programs and projects. Communicating and engaging with stakeholders is another important part, along with performance monitoring.
- Delivery support that includes managing risks and issues, controlling change, handling finances, commercial quality assurances, monitoring and reviewing the overall progress of projects and programmes, reporting, and continuous strategic realignment.
